Meltdown
Lyrics
Here amidst the fire and smoke
Our deal meets its end
I’m prepared to cast away
The means for my defense
You, my blood-soaked blade,
Were my weapon and my friend,
But I’ll not be a slave
So to the fire you I send
In my dreams your threats are not so veiled
I release the goal for which we sailed
You need me more than I need you
And having your gift means a favor’s due
So Uk’otoa, I say you and I are through
Watching the falchion sink
Has only left me feeling worse
What other choice had I
When the alternative’s perverse?
You give only to take
With threats to ‘punish’ and ‘consume’
So it’s clear to me
The only thing you’ll bring is doom
In my dreams your threats are not so veiled
I release the goal for which we sailed
You need me more than I need you
And having your gift means a favor’s due
So Uk’otoa, I say you and I are through
You need me more than I need you!
You and I are through!
The Story
Meltdown was inspired by the scene in Critical Role C2E72 where Fjord (a half-orc hexblade warlock voiced by Travis Willingham) tells his patron that either things are going to go his way or he's done, and if that means he loses his powers, then so be it. He tests his patron, Uk'otoa, by plunging the Sword of Fathoms into his chest and then throwing it into a pool of lava of the Underforge.
